4 Things to Think About Before Getting a Distracted Driving Simulator

Consider these things before investing in a simulator for your distracted driving program.

It’s important to know your budget before you start looking for a distracted driving simulator.Distracted driving simulators are a powerful tool for use in distracted driver programs. We routinely hear from educators about the impact the simulator experience has on their students since they allow for engagement in the learning process beyond reading a book or watching a video.

These simulators are certainly an investment for any educational program or organization, so we want to ensure you select the right model for your needs. Below are some questions to consider before purchasing a distracted driving simulator.

  1. Which simulator is suitable for my program?
  2. What is my budget?
  3. What are my training needs?
  4. Where will the simulator be primarily used?

Keep reading to learn more about choosing the best distracted driving simulator for your educational program!

Which simulator is suitable for my program?

You’ll first want to decide which simulator is the right one for your program’s unique needs. The Fatal Vision® Roadster is a durable, commercial-grade pedal kart ideal for your distracted driving demonstrations, classes, training courses, and community events. This simulator comes in single-seater or two-seater options.

The Simulated Impaired Driving Experience® (SIDNE®) is a custom-built electric kart that allows drivers and passengers to experience what can happen when they operate a vehicle while drowsy or distracted. The SIDNE only comes in a two-seater option.

While our distracted driving simulators have the same goal, they work differently. SIDNE is an electric vehicle, while the Roadster is a manually-operated pedal kart. The SIDNE more closely mirrors the experience of driving a real car since it uses a motor.

What is my budget?

Next, you’ll want to determine your budget for the simulator. Our two simulators come at different price points — about $1,000 for the Roadster and $22,000 for the SIDNE electric vehicle — with several optional add-on accessories to enhance the user experience.

What are my training needs?

Your educators should be well-equipped to demonstrate the use of the simulator for students safely. When you purchase either the Ultimate Roadster or the SIDNE simulators, the cost includes at least one day of onsite training with an experienced Innocorp trainer.

Where will the simulator be primarily used?

It’s important to consider where you expect to use the simulator. The Roadster and the SIDNE can be used indoors or on paved surfaces, but the Roadster can also be taken off-road, such as on the grass.

SIDNE, on the other hand, cannot be taken into grassy areas and needs to stay on a paved area (either indoors or outdoors). Common spaces to use SIDNE include a school gymnasium or an indoor community center.
