Do’s and Don’ts for Using Vision Impairment Simulation Glasses

Here’s what to do — and what not to do — to get the most value from your Fatal Vision goggles. 

Fatal Vision’s vision impairment simulation glasses are effective tools for illustrating the effects alcohol, drugs, fatigue, concussions, and distractions can have on reaction times and driving abilities. As a community educator, teacher, or law enforcement official, Fatal Vision products allow you to engage with your audience in a hands-on way that reinforces the lessons you’re teaching, both in the classroom and outside of it.

But in order to see the transformative results the glasses can have on your education and outreach efforts, there are a few guidelines we suggest you follow.

In this post, we’ll dive into a few of the “do’s and don’ts” of our vision impairment simulation goggles, so you can use them to their fullest potential in your class, education program, or event.

DO read the instructions and schedule training with the Innocorp team

If this is your first time incorporating vision impairment simulation glasses into your curriculum or outreach program, fully review the included instructions before you get started. We recommend running through your program or lesson before actually presenting it to students, so you feel comfortable with the materials you’re presenting and using the glasses and their accompanying activities.

DO clean the goggles between uses 

Keeping your glasses clean is vital to not only keeping your participants safe and healthy but also to helping the glasses stay functioning and looking as intended. After each use, clean the glasses with a soft cloth and use the germicidal wipes from Innocorp to disinfect the lenses thoroughly.

DON’T transport the goggles without their carrying case

Keep your vision impairment simulation glasses secure in the included microfiber storage bag or carrying case. The bag and carrying case protects the glasses from damage and dust, and it ensures that they’re kept in a safe environment when not in use.

DO stay in control

Depending on the age of your program participants, you may run into a situation where a participant’s experience with the Fatal Vision glasses could devolve into seemingly promoting the behavior you’re trying to prevent. 

For example, if a student tries walking in a straight line with the alcohol vision impairment simulation glasses on and does so successfully, they may react by thinking that they’d still be able to drive while impaired. You can keep control of the situation by pointing out that while they may have completed the task successfully, it may have taken them longer or required a higher level of focus that could cause them to miss something else happening on the road. 

By staying in control, you can not only help prevent unsafe situations but also catch teachable moments that ensure you and your participants are getting as much value out of the glasses and activities as possible. 

DON’T discourage participants from engaging

Your participants may at times find the way the glasses impair their vision and coordination amusing. If they laugh during the activities, it’s OK!  Laughter is a sign that participants are enjoying the activity while learning valuable lessons about the effects of drugs, alcohol, distractions, concussions, or fatigue on their ability to operate a vehicle.

Reinforce the lesson and use relatable real-life experiences that promote discussion and conversation about how easily impaired driving can impact them or their loved ones.  Laughter and engagement are the key to starting these meaningful discussions. It’s also important to keep an eye out for any potentially unsafe use of the goggles, such as running or using the goggles in a reckless manner. Having fun during the lessons is OK as long as you maintain control.

DO have participants get a baseline during the activities

Before you let your participants try an activity with the vision impairment simulation glasses on, have them try the activity without them. Then, have them repeat the activity with the glasses on. This will give participants a baseline performance to see just how big of an impact substances, distractions, or drowsiness can have on their skills, reaction times, and coordination.
